Welcome to the High Court Bar Association, Nagpur

The High Court Bar Association, Nagpur (HCBA) is one of the oldest and most distinguished Bar Associations in India, with a proud legacy dating back to 1922. Its history is inseparably intertwined with the evolution of the Nagpur High Court itself.

Originating as the Nagpur Bar Association during the era of the Judicial Commissioners Court, the Association played a pivotal role in advocating for the establishment of a full-fledged High Court for the Central Provinces and Berar. The vision, determination, and relentless efforts of the stalwarts of the Bar ultimately culminated in the establishment of the Nagpur High Court in 1936, followed by the inauguration of its iconic building in 1940, celebrated as the "Poem in Stone."

Following the reorganisation of States in 1960, the Nagpur High Court became the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court, and the Association assumed its present identity as the High Court Bar Association, Nagpur.

Over more than a century of its existence, the Association has been home to some of the finest legal luminaries of the country. Distinguished members of this Bar have adorned the Bench as Judges and Chief Justices of various High Courts and have also served with distinction on the Supreme Court of India, including Justice S. A. Bobde, former Chief Justice of India, and Justice B. R. Gavai, among many others.

The High Court Bar Association has consistently upheld the highest traditions of the legal profession by promoting excellence in advocacy, safeguarding the independence of the Bar, advancing the cause of justice, and contributing meaningfully to legal and constitutional development. Throughout its history, the Association has remained committed to the welfare of advocates, the improvement of judicial infrastructure, and the preservation of the noblest values of the profession.

Dr. Sir Harisingh Gour was one of India's foremost jurists, educationists, parliamentarians, and social reformers, whose contributions to the legal profession and public life continue to inspire generations. He had the distinct honour of being the first President of the High Court Bar Association, Nagpur. Under his visionary leadership, the Association emerged as a powerful voice for the legal fraternity, championing judicial reforms and relentlessly advocating for the establishment of a High Court at Nagpur. An eminent legal scholar of international repute, Dr. Gour also played a significant role in the development of Indian jurisprudence and was deeply committed to progressive social legislation. His advocacy for reforms, including measures for the protection of children and the advancement of justice, reflected his unwavering belief that law must serve as an instrument of social transformation. The enduring values of scholarship, integrity, public service, and fearless advocacy that he exemplified continue to guide and inspire the High Court Bar Association, Nagpur.
